Your character expressions are absolutely A Weee Some!
The grin alone speaks a thousand words -- Ninja pizza delivery service [link] coming soon. Join now! Heya Silent Kitty.
I love the overall effect of the piece, The maddened expression and seeming lust for power are very evident in her poise, I remember just how vicious this particular character is and the expression and pose are perfect to convey her personality. I like how you have the billow and soft edges of the sand being lifted into the air...that is an effect I've yet to master. However if you are looking for a more gritty effect, you might want to try the Dry Brush in Photoshop...it uses two colors *such as two shades of yellow* and mixes them with a fairly good looking sand effect. you could trail it through your clouds for depth and apply them to your dunes for texture and shading. An example of this very effect can be found here: RDOX -- Denise (AKA Tigershark) Original Stories My Website My Drunk Duck Profile You're welcome. I hope it helps!

Critiques
Compositionally, I think I would've preferred to see the character weighted to the left side of the image's live area, leaving the negative space to the right for environment. Doing this, i think, would've given the eye more movement in that direction, but this is a personal preference-- and a small one at that. On the left, there's a gust of wind blowing right, and even though there are things in the air (which automatically suggests movement in the mind of the typical viewer), that movement fizzles in the cloud behind the character that doesn't break the border of the image. An easy solution would be to open the composition by having that cloud break the border.
I adore the design of the character's face, though, and overall the image is thougthful and successful. Congratulations. :]
Vision
I love the foreground and background how they convey the image of being in the sandstorm and yet he is unafraid ready to take it on head strong. Color wise, he almost blends into the sand making him more mysterious yet he is distinct.
Originality
I'm ecstatic when I see something new and original. Its creative. The colors and shadows create this professional image with intense emotion.
Technique
Again I'm blurring the topics I wish to talk about but with the professional look it puts us into this world as if he's telling us 'you can't take me on'. As for you not liking the way the sand turned out I think you did a tremendously awesome job. To make it seem more sand like if you want though lighten up on the opacity a bit at the top to create the effect more believably so it doesn't seem like a cloud. But I love it. I know how to do it, I just can't.
Impact
From my responses over all on this it certainly impacts me personally because I'm one of those type of people who won't back down and can take (or try) it all. I have to say that to get me to write a critique I have to be impacted by it.
